Blountstown Walks Off Holmes County For 1A-2 Title
A late rally lifted the Blountstown Tigers all the way back to a walk-off, 6-5 victory over Holmes County in Thursday night’s 1A-2 championship at Cottondale High. The Tigers (16-10) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then Jacob Yon tagged up and scored on a sac-fly RBI from senior Kyle Skipper in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The final frame was as action-packed as the rest of the contest. Jordan Jenkins reached on an error, Yon was intentionally walked and Josh Evans also walked to load the bases. A fielder’s choice erased the lead runner at the plate as the Blue Devils (14-12) nearly worked out of the jam. But then Skipper got ahold of a pitch well enough to allow Yon to tag and score ahead of the throw.
Both teams remain alive in the season, having already clinched a regional playoff berth by reaching the title game. Blountstown will host Ponce De Leon in a regional semifinal, while Holmes County will travel to play at 1A-1 champion Paxton.
After falling behind in the sixth, Holmes County answered right back to tie the game and keeps things exciting. Tyler Jackson walked, stole second and then scored on an RBI single from Bubba Nelson.
The Blue Devils had built a small lead early on, thanks to RBIs from Skipper and Daylon Richard. Will Brunk scored twice and was 2-for-4 on the day.
Tucker Jordan was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Tigers.
