Lafayette Falls To Chiefland In 1A Championship Rematch
In a unique meeting between last season’s 1A state finalists, it was a reversal of fortunes as host Chiefland rallied late for the victory. The 2016 1A state runners-up connected for a double into the gap to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 walk-off victory.
Both teams came into Tuesday’s meeting fresh off a one-run victory on Monday night. After rallying for the walk-off win last night, some late miscues allowed this one to slip away on the Hornets (1-1).
“It’s still early and these are things we can correct, hopefully,” Lafayette manager Tom Hanson said. “We’re not the same team this year, certainly, but I’ve got some good baseball players. We’re not swinging real well right now, but I think the hitting will come around. Tonight Chiefland did what they needed to do.”
Drew Perry tossed four solid innings for Lafayette, not allowing any earned runs while striking out five on 62 total pitches.
Coley Hangston had two RBIs and Holden Richardson added an RBI groundout to score another runner, after a series of fundamental execution helped get a guy into scoring position.
“I love that kind of baseball when you manufacture runs,” Hanson said.
The two teams will play again later this season, at Lafayette.
